PICKLEBALL 101: A BEGINNER’S GUIDE

P Pickleball, often dubbed the fastest-growing sport in America, is making waves in India. It’s a captivating game that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, and it’s suitable for all ages. If you’re new to pickleball, here’s a beginner’s guide to get you started on this exciting journey.

What is Pickleball – Pickleball is played on a rectangular court with a net in the middle. It’s typically a doubles game, but it can also be played as singles. The equipment consists of a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball, which resembles a wiffle ball. The objective is to score points by sending the ball over the net and into the opponent’s court without letting it bounce more than once.

Basic Rules are as follows:

Serve – The game starts with an underhand serve diagonally across the net. The serve must clear the non-volley zone (the “kitchen”) and land in the opposite service box.

Volley – Players can volley the ball (hit it in the air) except when they are within the non-volley zone.

Double Bounce Rule – After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before players can volley it. After these two bounces, volleys are allowed.

Non-Volley Zone – This is a seven-foot area on both sides of the net where players are not allowed to volley the ball. They can enter this zone but must let the ball bounce before hitting it.

Scoring – Points are scored only by the serving team. Games are typically played to 11 points, and you must win by at least two points.
